Medical Education

GP Registrars

You may be offered an appointment with a GP registrar. These doctors are fully qualified and have already worked in a range of hospital settings. They are now completing their specialist training in General Practice, working under the supervision of our experienced team.

Rest assured, you will receive the same high standard of care and attention during your appointment.

Medical Students

We also support the training of medical students, who are in the earlier stages of their medical careers. Occasionally, a student may be present during your consultation with a doctor or nurse.

We will always ask your permission first — and if you’d prefer not to have a student present, that’s absolutely fine. Your care will not be affected in any way.

Working Together Across the PCN

Historically, training has been managed at the level of individual practices. While this has worked well, it can place a lot of responsibility on just a few individuals.

Now, with the move to Primary Care Network (PCN)-wide learning environments, we have the opportunity to offer a more connected and supportive approach. This allows learners to benefit from experience across multiple practices, helping them develop a wider range of skills and insight.

Supporting a Sustainable Workforce

Health Education England recognises the important role PCNs play in building the primary care workforce of the future. They are working in partnership with PCNs to grow training capacity and support learners across all healthcare professions.

We're pleased to announce that HIPC PCN, which includes Tunstall Primary Care, has now been approved to deliver training as a network-wide educational environment.

This exciting development will help us:

  • Create new opportunities for learning and mentorship
  • Strengthen our ability to train and support staff
  • Positively impact the future capacity of Primary Care across our community
